The obligatory Links page
Well, everyone else has a page of links,
why should The Truth be any different?
First up, indispensable freeware...
Opera web browser
I don't use Internet Explorer, I use Opera, which is a very very good web browser indeed,
but be warned - it isn't Internet Explorer.
AVG Anti-Virus software
Anti-virus software that's been protecting me very nicely indeed for ages.
The regular updates are free too.
Zone Alarm Firewall
This also works very well, has regular free updates and also uses up far less space and resources than Dr Norton or the other big expensive firewalls.
SpyBot
Gets rid of those little unwanted programs that make a nuisance of themselves either with advertising or by reporting back to advertising companies with your browsing habits...
KaZaa++
Lets people share programs and files on over the internet.
Get free (but technically illegal) copies of just about any software, music, or film you can imagine.
And don't forget to share your files - that's how the whole thing works, by everyone SHARING!
UPDATE: KaZaa's gone right shite lately, full of duff files and the like, so I've stopped using it for the most part now. Recommended replacements are DC++, but which is rather more difficult, and BitTorrent (there are loads of different pieces of software to use BitTorrent with but I prefer this one). BitTorrent works completely differently from SoulSeek or DC++ or KaZaa, and isn't as straightforward to grasp, but it's worth making the effort to do so...
SoulSeek
SoulSeek is like Kazaa but it's mainly for sharing MP3 music files.
You can get everything on SoulSeek.
UPDATE: And you still can!
Explorer Launchpad
This may seem pointless but this add-on to Windows Explorer to let you set up short-cuts to oft-used folders is actually very handy.
dBpowerAmp Music Converter
For "ripping" music files from CD to MP3 or converting files you've already got this is what you need.
UPDATE: Sadly you now need to pay for dBpowerAmp (about £6-7, I think), but I've found it to be that well-designed and useful that I did!
WinAmp - you just can't beat it for playing music on the PC. x
IrfanView
Got some graphics or photos to look at? Use the simple but powerful IrfanView.
FirstPage 2000
I built this site with FirstPage 2000, an excellent HTML coding programming for any level of expertise.

And now that your PC's nicely set up, where to go...?
The Alien Online
Science Fiction/Fantasy news, reviews, interviews - and some very good articles
Infinity Plus
It really is the business for short sf/fantasy fiction on the internet,
as well as more reviews and occasional non-fiction pieces
New Science Fiction Alliance/BBR
A one-stop shop for subscriptions to any and all small-press fiction, non-fiction
Alternet
American site with lots of interesting essays and news - updated daily.
SchNews
A weekly newsletter from Justice? - Brighton's Direct Action collective - with the stories behind the news...
Couple it with UK Indymedia and you have an excellent alternative news reporting combination!
Urban-75
isn't as up-to-date but is hipper and funnier. And the forums are always interesting.
Ethical Consumer
Put all that hard-earned knowledge about the evils of corporatism into practice!
George Monbiot (author of The Captive State)
He rocks
John Pilger
He rocks, too. Possibly even harder
The Onion
Come on, everyone knows about this, don't they?
Probably the only sane news site left in the USA.
The Adventures of Weebl and Bob
Weebl's a potty-mouthed weeble-type character with a taste for pies. Bob isn't.
The funniest animation on the web but I don't know why...
Sci-Tech Daily
is where I always go for stimulating snippets of Science and Technology
Equally, for stimulating snippets of the Arts and Humanities, I go to Arts and Letters Daily
Opal Music and Rough Trade
If you like obscure indie/electronica/mad music then these guys can help and will help
Plus, Rough Trade do a brilliant "new releases" e-mail every week - well worth signing up to!
PlayLouder
The design's a bit harsh sometimes but otherwise this is a pretty good site for indie music news and stuff.
FaxYourMp.com
Everyone should know about this site - fax your MP - for free - and tell them to stop pissing about and do some good, or else you won't vote for them! They don't like that.
The Fourth Rail
Reviews of new comics. By grown-ups. For grown-ups.
Webmonkey
Taught me everything I know (not much, but that's not their fault) about writing HTML.
A Nice Cup of Tea and a Biscuit
Ahh, yes. That's better. Simply the best place for news about my favourite food - biscuits.
Information Addiction
I don't know who this guy is but he has some fascinating stuff on his site.
So does New Scientist News
Go on, don't be an ignorant peasant all your life.
RefDesk.com
A HUGE search site. If it's not on here then it probably doesn't exist.
Eggmurders.com
Aaron Hendren writes in New Mexico and is a very nice and talented man.
